Why String Trimming Damages Your Back
An average String Trimmer weighs 14 pounds. This weight is supported by the hands, which are stretched out away from your center of gravity. This creates an in-efficent lever as the support of the weight is carried on the shoulders while the load is held at the opposite end by the hands. It does not take long for this stress to over work the muscles of the shoulders and central back. In fact this is one of the worst positions you can maintain as far as ergonomic balance.
Many people have tried String Trimmer straps as the thinking is this will help to support the weight of the String Trimmer. However, everyone who trys to use the Trimmer Strap quickly discovers they do not work. This inadequacy is not apparent until one trys to reach out. The String Trimmer Strap is fixed in length; from the neck to the trimmer, this distance can not be changed unless the String Trimmer is picked up by the hands to get closer and of course you can never reach out farther than the strap is long. This defeats the purpose of the strap altogether.
This fixed length causes the user of the String Trimmer to have to take tiny baby steps as they string trim around a Mail Box, or down the angle of a hill. Of course every user of a String Trimmer with a strap begins to pick up the trimmer weight off the strap so they can try to be more flexible, more mobile. But this defeats the purpose of the strap and the mobility is still limited.
Professional Landscapers sometimes use a shoulder harness with bike handle bars to trim large areas with a side to side motion. Even still the mobility is limited to the fixed length area of the rig. Then came a new invention of a String Trimmer with wheels. This was a great idea while it was an idea, but its practical applications just didnt work either.
The String Trimmer was invented in 1974 and it has taken 30 years until a practical application was invented to solve the problem of ergonomic imbalance of holding a heavy string trimmer.
